The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I’m not a coming-of-age-movies kind of person.

I have watched the odd one, but I don’t relish them. They all have the same kind of story: the typical social outcast who, after 17 years of being a social outcast, discovers he can actually talk, crushes on a girl, gets the girl, becomes the popular kid, the end. Sometimes they deviate (sometimes the social outcast is a girl) but, in the end, they are all the same.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower isn’t though. And I hate it for that. Okay, I don’t hate it. I loved it.

The movie tells the story of Charlie (Logan Lerman), smart, observant but troubled and shy, being taken in by a group of seniors (under which Emma Watson and Ezra Miller).

There are cringe moments – no teen movie is complete without some – and moments of genuine sadness and tears. Charlie’s story isn’t like every other teenager’s story, which is why I loved it. I also had the privilege of reading the book, which was just as amazing, written by Stephen Chbosky. I was about to comment that the book and the movie were as close as you can get to each other, which is rare for a movie based on a book, only to realize that the director was the author of the book. That’s why….

Another thing that I love about this movie is Ezra Miller.

I saw Ezra Miller in Royal Pains, a TV show about doctors and the Hamptons and a fit doctor at that, and I loved him in it. I am to acquaint myself with more of his work, because I have positively fallen in love with him. He plays the character of Patrick in the movie, and Patrick is the guy you would want as your best friend. He is that just that good.

Ezra Miller, if you ever read this, I want to be your friend.

Again, apologies for writing late, I had a super busy hectic week.

Until next,

Rivanna xxx
